The Singularity University, a new school for futurologists, is not as far-fetched as it sounds, says Ian Douglas.

Ray Kurzweil, recipient of Google and Nasa funding to set up a school for futurologists called the Singularity University, is a deeply optimistic man.

In his books, particularly The Singularity is Near and The Age of Spiritual Machines, he maps out a future for humanity in which we live forever, supported by a fleet of cleverer-than-human artificial intelligences who solve such trivial problems as hunger and disease, while simultaneously creating ever more intelligent computer minds, racing technological progress forward according to his Law of Accelerated Returns.

The human mind, to Kurzweil, is a thinking machine with a computing power that can be measured like any household PC. As processors become more and more powerful they will approach and surpass our feeble grey cells. By 2019 some of them will pass the Turing test, in which an observer cannot tell the difference between a conversation with a human and one with a machine, and by 2029 they will be widely accepted as not only intelligent but conscious. more>>>

ScienceDaily (Feb. 2, 2009) — Orphaned chimpanzee infants given special ‘mothering’ by humans are more advanced than the average child at nine months of age.

In the first study to examine the effect of different types of care for infant chimpanzees on cognition, researchers found chimpanzees who were given extra emotionally-based care were more cognitively advanced than human infants.

Federal regulators have cleared the way for the first human trials of human embryonic stem-cell research, authorizing researchers to test whether the cells are safe to use in spinal injury patients, the company behind the trials announced Friday.

The tests could begin by summer, said Dr. Thomas Okarma, president and CEO of the Geron Corporation.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved the trials, which will use human stem cells authorized for research by former President George Bush in 2001.

The patients will be those with the most severe spinal cord injuries, called complete spinal cord injuries. ”A complete spinal cord injury has no hope of recovery below the injury,” Okarma told CNN.

”This is significant because it’s the first clinical trial of a human embryonic-based product.”

The primary purpose of the trial will be to see whether injecting these cells into a patient is safe — but Okarma said researchers will also look for any signs of recovery. more>>>

A snakelike robotic arm may one day medically attend to soldiers as they are carried off the battlefield.

The first 30 minutes after a battlefield injury are dire: that’s when nearly 86 percent of battlefield deaths occur. Before attending to the wounded, frontline physicians have to quickly locate the casualty and extract him from the battlefield, often under heavy fire. This can take up costly minutes, as well as expose medics themselves as possible targets.

Now researchers at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) are developing technology to give battlefield medics a helping hand–literally. Howie Choset, an associate professor of robotics at CMU, has engineered a snakelike robotic arm equipped with various sensors that can monitor a soldier’s condition. The robot can be wirelessly controlled via a joystick, so that a doctor at a remote clinic may move the robot to any point on a soldier’s body to assess his injuries as he’s being carried to a safe location. The robot’s serpentine flexibility allows it to maneuver within tight confines, so that, in case a casualty can’t be extracted from the battlefield immediately, the robot can perform an initial medical assessment in the field. more>>>

Google dove into the sea on Monday by releasing an updated 3-D mapping service that lets users explore the ocean as if they were dolphins, swimming past submerged volcanoes and through underwater canyons.

The enhanced Google Earth, available for download at earth.google.com, offers everything from photographs and videos of sea life to models of shipwrecks to water temperature data collected from buoys. Dozens of partners – including the National Geographic Society, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration and the Scripps Oceanographic Institution – contributed information to the project, which is aimed at fostering learning, promoting conservation and, no doubt, increasing Google’s popularity. more>>>

With sports fans still getting used to their high-definition television sets, the National Football League is already thinking ahead to the next potential upgrade: 3-D.

Next week, a game between the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders will be broadcast live in 3-D to theaters in Los Angeles, New York and Boston. It is a preliminary step on what is likely a long road to any regular 3-D broadcasts of football games.

The idea is a “proof of concept,” says Howard Katz, NFL senior vice president of broadcasting and media operations. “We want to demonstrate this and let people get excited about it and see what the future holds.”

The several hundred guests at the three participating theaters Dec. 4 will include representatives from the NFL’s broadcasting partners and from consumer-electronics companies. The event will be closed to the general public. Burbank, Calif.-based 3ality Digital LLC will shoot the game with special cameras and transmit it to a satellite. Thomson SA’s Technicolor Digital Cinema is providing the satellite services and digital downlink to each theater, and Real D 3D Inc. will power the display in the theaters.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Seven months after IBM delivered the world’s fastest supercomputer, it has announced an even speedier one with the computing power of 2 million laptops.

IBM said on Tuesday it is developing the technology for its new Sequoia computer, with delivery scheduled in 2011 to the Department of Energy for use at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Sequoia will chug along at 20 petaflops per second and is one order of magnitude quicker than its predecessor. The earlier machine, delivered in June to the Energy Department, broke the 1 petaflop barrier.

Peta is a term for quadrillion and FLOP stands for floating point operations per second.

Sequoia, and a smaller computer called Dawn, are being built in Rochester, Minnesota, for use in simulating nuclear tests. IBM says they can also be used for complex tasks like weather forecasting or oil exploration.

IBM says Sequoia will be highly energy-efficient for the job it does but even so will occupy 96 refrigerator-sized racks in an area the size of a big house — 3,422 square feet (318 square meters).

Edited 2/2/09: The cited study discusses pre-natal genetic screening, not only embryo screening; I’ve updated some wording to reflect this, but it doesn’t have any major impact on the overall message.
Razib points to an article suggesting that Australian couples are “flocking” to a US fertility clinic that allows them to screen their potential IVF embryos for sex and even cosmetic traits like skin and eye colour, in addition to variants that predispose to severe disease risk. (“Flocking”, in this context, means about 14 couples a month.)

This follows on the heels of a fairly widely-publicised study published last week that surveyed around 1,000 genetic counselling patients about their attitudes towards pre-natal genetic testing. The study was sold to the media as indicating that “consumers desire more genetic testing, but not designer babies” – but the numbers actually suggest a substantial market for genetic screening. more>>>
