My active interest is in exposing the idea of accelerating change to the uninitiated. I enjoy bringing the wonder of accelerating change to others and am becoming increasingly involved in the discussion regarding the direction of future endeavors.

This weeks news makes it a tough week to deny technology acceleration or an eventual technological Singularity. A new machine makes an animal heart pump much like a live heart after it has been removed from the animals body.

After a pig’s final oink, a new machine can pump the dead animal’s extracted heart so that the muscle beats much like the live one did, scientists say.

The machine, created by researchers at North Carolina State University, can help scientists experiment with new technologies for heart surgery without sacrificing the time and money usually needed to perform research on live animals or carry out a clinical trial.

Before medical devices can be used in heart surgery, they are tested on live pigs because their heart valves are very similar to human valves. But these studies are expensive and scientists need to get permission to use live animals for their research, which takes time.

Robots are getting better at finding their way around unknown areas, and making their own maps as they explore. But robots lost in urban areas don’t need to rely on their own faculties to get from place to place, German roboticists have shown.

Their mobile robot simply rolls up to any humans nearby and asks for directions. By using that strategy, their robot has become one of the first to be properly let loose in the real world, not just carefully controlled environments.

Martin Buss’s team at the Technical University of Munich dumped their mobile robot outside the university and instructed it to find its way to the Marienplatz in the centre of Munich, some 1.5 kilometres away. more>>>

Europe’s Herschel and Planck telescopes have blasted into space on an Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou in French Guiana.

The satellites are being sent into orbit to gather fundamental new insights into the nature of the cosmos.

The Ariane thundered clear of the launch pad at 1312 GMT (1412 BST) – its flight lasting just under half an hour.

Mission controllers in Germany made contact with the telescopes over the Indian Ocean once they had separated from the rocket’s upper-stage.

The acquisition of the signals, relayed through ground stations in Australia, will have been a moment of huge relief for everyone connected with the two observatory projects.

Their combined programme cost is 1.9bn euros (£1.7bn; $2.5bn), which made Herschel and Planck the highest value payload the European Space Agency’s (Esa) science division had ever put on a single rocket. more>>>

Plants use a genetic memory to recognise when it is spring and can even count the number of cold days, Australian plant scientists have revealed.

In a paper published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, researchers show how winter cereal crops recognise when it is time to start flowering.

Co-author Dr Jim Peacock of CSIRO Plant Industry in Canberra says the findings could, in the future, help scientists genetically adapt wheat to remain productive under changing environments.

Peacock says winter cereal crops need exposure to an extended period of cold weather to begin flowering, a process known as vernalisation.

NEW YORK (CNN) — Myriad Genetics, a Utah-based company, vowed Wednesday to “vigorously defend” itself against a legal challenge to its patents on two human genes linked to breast and ovarian cancers, its attorney told CNN.
A lawyer in the case says patenting genes would be like patenting an eyeball removed from someone.

“Myriad strongly believes its patents are valid and enforceable and will be upheld by the courts,” said Richard Marsh, the company’s general counsel.

The American Civil Liberties Union is suing Myriad, arguing that patenting pure genes is unconstitutional and hinders research for a cancer cure. more>>>
