The DVD of my last film is for sale now! I am now focusing my efforts on a documentary about the future of emerging technologies called We Are The Singularity. Check that out and remember that if you join you will have access to a private website and will get to watch the documentary being made.
The Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence (SIAI) has appointed Michael Vassar to the position of President. Previously, he was a Founder and Chief Strategist at SirGroovy.com, an online music licensing firm, and has held positions with with Aon, the Peace Corps, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. In his new role with SIAI, Mr. Vassar will build the organization’s research capabilities and oversee the annual Singularity Summit.

Washington is inching closer to a newspaper bailout of some sort.
First Senator John Kerry hosted a hearing on the “Future Of Journalism.” Then, ending his keynote at the annual White House correspondents dinner last weekend, President Obama said “a government without newspapers, a government without a tough and vibrant media of all sorts is not an option for the United States of America.”

As an industry long-timer (I started covering PCs on June 4, 1984), I well know who Ray Kurzweil is. This pioneer in optical character recognition, text to speech, and synthesizers (where would Yes have been without him?) never stopped inventing. Now Google has tapped Kurzweil to help run a new Google-sponsored university called Singularity.

Notice that Doug Barney referred to himself as an industry long-timer. Let me point out that my IT industry career started in 1961. Click here for more information on me.
An update on the We Are The Singularity feature documentary film project:
We need just 20 people to donate to help me get to Singularity University at the end of June. My needs are modest: tapes, airfare, lodging, and if feasible – food.
haha ok ok now remember when you donate you don’t just help me get to Silicon Valley but every donor gets access to the exclusive website (H+ Cafe) where you get to actually give feedback on the development of the film AND you get a DVD when it’s complete. I’ll be posting behind the scenes footage on H+ Cafe after shoots and unveiling edited scenes along the way.
Anyway, it’s a fun project that’ll last 1-2 years and you get to be involved. and it’s only $25 to donate and join in.
Utopia or Artilect War? A debate between J. Storrs Hall and Hugo de Garis. J. Storrs Hall, president of the Foresight Institute, takes the position in this debate that the rise of artificial intelligence levels will create a utopia for humanity. Hugo de Garis, Wuhan University, China, takes the opposite position, namely that the rise of godlike massively intelligent machines will be catastrophic for humanity, leading to the worst, most passionate war humanity has ever known, using late 21st century weapons, killing billions of people.
This debate between J. Storrs Hall and Hugo de Garis takes place at the 2nd AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) conference, 2009
The specific item of interest in this post is Ray Kurzweil’s claim that solar energy is on a Moore’s Law-like curve with a power/$ doubling time of two years.
