Why would they have the power and not use it? Because some law tells them not to? Hah! Read on:

From the New York Times:

WASHINGTON — The National Security Agency is facing renewed scrutiny over the extent of its domestic surveillance program, with critics in Congress saying its recent intercepts of the private telephone calls and e-mail messages of Americans are broader than previously acknowledged, current and former officials said. more>>>

I’d like to thank everyone that attended especially Micheal Anissimov who does so much to educate the world about existential risks and the implications of exponential trends in technological growth.

It was really cool to meet people that read this blog and I’m finding out that those who read Blogging the Singularity are intelligent, creative, and caring people.

Those who are working hardest on making the H+ and S+ futures happen are too busy working to educate the public and that’s where we come in. If you are reading this blog then you are in the know and have a responsibility to ensure that these ideas make it into the general public sooner rather than later. The sooner the public becomes aware of how quickly and how drastic change could come, the better prepared humanity will be to tackle the challenges ahead.

Visit H+ Cafe, write a blog, place a badge on your websites, upload pictures, video, or art, and chat with one another…create content that will add to the discussion and join the movement to educate society so that rational minds can make rational decisions regarding the future of humanity.

Other organizations concerned citizens should consider joining is the Lifeboat Foundation or Methuselah Foundation.

Whether they believe it now or not, at least the seed of reason will have been sowed before the reality of exponential technological advancement rains upon humanity.

And if there is no Singularity? Then at least we didn’t resort to name-calling to try and prove our point! (see: ‘”male nerd” in this blog post)

We’re just concerned, and for a good reason, because we actually give a damn about the future of this precious species and planet and are NOT willing to ignore ANYTHING that has the potential to destroy it.

(I’m tired of typing ‘singularitarian’ so I’ll just call it ‘S+’)

So we’re hosting an online meeting in the chatroom today, Wednesday June 17th @ 7pm PST

If you’re concerned about time zone and time don’t worry I’ll be there hanging out all night to catch everyone.

All individuals and organization representatives are welcome to join in.

I fully expect every reader from BTS to be there – just kidding – but I would like to meet some of you so if you can make it it’s tonight @ 7pm PST.

This was an experiment of which you will see much more of in the future as more people release footage into the creative commons.

From MoviePals.com:

Jathia’s Wager is a science fiction film about a young man living in an isolated community of humans who must make a life changing decision about his future species. Just as open-source software is a collaboration of programmers creating free code, this film was created by a collaboration of movie enthusiasts, and it is being distributed for free online. The audience is encouraged to participate in future derivative works, and the original source materials are made available for that purpose.

What do you think about Google? Please post your reply to this thread at H+ Cafe.

Google’s privacy literature provides generous leeway for it to use our information for it’s own purposes. Are their intentions sinister? And one more thing: could Google’s systems become the first smarter-than-human General Artificial Intelligence? They did sponsor the Singularity University after all!

Here is a video of a pretty asian lady explaining Google privacy practices to what seems to be a kindergarten class:

This concept basically combines many different collaborative technologies together. Brilliant and a natural progression in ever-evolving Internet technology.

My only question is…with all of our information on Googles servers can and do they spy on all of this information and possibly use it for anti-competitive practices?

ADDED TO POST ON 6/11/09:
It’s been brought up to me that Google is releasing the source code so you are “able to run your own completely private google wave server”. But it won’t be used by those who don’t have the technical ability to set up their own server or can’t incur the costs of doing so. There’s still plenty of information to mine outside of the enterprise.

What I mean by privacy is that Google looks at searches to find out what’s on the mind’s of people. They get a picture of society as a whole through searches and use that information to invest money and move on markets. We’ll assume they do this because none of their privacy literature specifically stops them from doing so. Now they also have Gmail with tons of personal information, and soon they will have Wave. I’ve just wondering…do they look at that information and use it for their own ends as long as they don’t share it? Should they be able to do that?

Google Gmail Privacy Notice:

Google maintains and processes your Gmail account and its contents to provide the Gmail service to you and to improve our services. The Gmail service includes relevant advertising and related links based on the IP address, content of messages and other information related to your use of Gmail.

So they say it in plain English: We can use your private information to “improve our services”, which to them I’m sure means “our market share and bottom line”

Then it states that it “includes relevant advertising” etc. but places no limits on what their “services” are and how your information is used to that end.

Enjoy the video and if you have anything to say about Google please visit this thread in the forums on H+ Cafe!

We are on the brink of technological breakthroughs that could augment our mental powers beyond recognition. It will soon be possible to boost human brainpower with electronic “plug-ins” or even by genetic enhancement. What will this mean for the future of humanity?

Ray Kurzweil’s latest graphs show that technology’s breakneck advances will only accelerate — recession or not. He unveils his new project, Singularity University, to study oncoming tech and guide it to benefit humanity.

This video was recorded at the February 2009 TED Conference held in Long Beach, California.

With a pair of feature films due for release in 2009, Ray Kurzweil is poised to shotgun the Singularity mega-meme to the mainstrean.

But how will the message and messenger be received? And what effect will Kurzweil’s rising star have on associated memes such as accelerating change, transhumanism, extropianism, futurism, AGI and other less extreme Singularity definitions?
If recent Newsweek (“is this the next great leap in human evolution, or just one man’s midlife crisis writ large?”) and slanted io9 (“the famous futurist’s meat brain has made some ludicrously inaccurate predictions”) coverage is any indicator, the seeds of a Kurzweil backlash are beginning to sprout — a social dynamic that probably also extends to technology in general. more>>>

Chris Williamson responds:

This is exactly why I’m shooting a documentary that doesn’t follow just one person around or presents only one idea about the future. And that’s why I’ve also asked others to get involved. I believe that more voices – not less – are needed. These ideas may get backlash because it’s seen as ‘one man’s crazy idea’ instead of as a full-on social movement.
It’s easier for the media to call one man a lunatic but try labeling tens of thousands as such!
We Are The Singularity intends to present it as just that – a social movement involving many individuals, companies, and organizations.
Putting all of the attention on one man such as Kurzweil makes it seem like it’s just HIM, his ideas, and nobody else’s when that is just NOT the case. There are a lot of views about the future.
But you know how the media are – everything’s a popularity contest!
I would definitely like to get you guys at futurescanner involved.
