“Write it down: Americans Elect. What Amazon.com did to books, what the blogosphere did to newspapers, what the iPod did to music, what drugstore.com did to pharmacies, Americans Elect plans to do to the two-party duopoly that has dominated American political life — remove the barriers to real competition, flatten the incumbents and let the people in. Watch out.”

We don’t live in a parliamentary system with %%% of voting totals determining %% of members of Congress or state legislatures. The only way to get rid of the two-party system would be to get rid of the Constitutionally mandated winner-take-all election system in America. When you have that system, people naturally gravitate toward two parties, in hopes of winning elections. It’s almost like chaos theory with two strange attractors plotted on the graph.

#5 of Six Things to Know: Americans Elect will revitalize and modernize how America does democracy.

Americans Elect is about reimagining our democracy for the 21st Century. After all, our democracy, and the way we choose our president, has evolved throughout our history.

At first, each political party’s caucus in Congress chose their respective presidential candidates. Then, in the 19th Century, the parties began holding national nominating conventions. That too changed when primary elections were organized to give voters a chance to nominate candidates at the polling place.

With every embrace of a new approach, Americans became empowered with a greater voice. And with today’s new technology and the Internet, it’s possible to take the next step. Americans Elect will hold a secure vote in the nation’s first-ever online nominating convention so that all voters, from all parties (and no party) and all states, get to have a say in their choices come Election Day 2012.

In the words of Thomas Jefferson, “Democracy is never a final achievement. It is a call to an untiring effort.” Americans Elect will answer the call – will you?

When you have people screaming about ID requirements to vote, this is the wrong way to go. There is absolutely no way to keep this honest. Of course, that’s what some people *want*.
