How’d I get interested in this stuff anyway?
I became interested in the Technological Singularity and the Transhumanist movement in 2000 when a hippy girl at a house party told me that she was going to attend a conference on the ‘meaning of life’. I was stunned, fascinated that people *actually* asked that question!
‘Meaning of Life?’
Of course, I Googled it! I typed “What is The Meaning of Life?” right there in that ubiquitous rectangle.
A LOT of hits returned, sending me on a journey through religions, cults, hypotheses, politics, and eventually science, physics, chemistry, biology, etc. I was looking everywhere for THE answer. During my journey through the vast human memescape, I eventually stumbled upon the thoughts of a transhumanist. Ok, wait a minute, what the HELL is this??? I HAD to take a deeper look. It seemed crazy at first because I was unaware of the underlying trends at work, but what I read…it…MADE SENSE! I was HOOKED!
It’s not an answer, you see, but a concept, something dynamic, open-ended, that doesn’t allow my mind rest. Speculation upon the future, the Technological Singularity, and Transhumanism all suit my personality very well, and I find these concepts more plausible every day. I sought not an answer. There are no answers, only questions. Every answer yields only more questions! It suits me because I realized that I’m comfortable with the questions, with not knowing, with not having to fabricate answers through religion, drugs, or anything else. It seems as though everyone has to have some sort of ‘answer’ to the big questions, when it’s quite obvious that there just aren’t any scientifically testable answers to “who created the universe?” or even “where did we come from?” let alone “where are we going?” But there are trends from which we can speculate, make inferences, hypothesize, and draw conclusions from.
Over the years I had to come to grips with the fact that these concepts are still not well known among the general public. I do not personally know anyone else who believes as I do. So I’ve kept quiet, unwilling to speak of what I’ve come to understand but I just can’t take it any longer. It’s my destiny to learn about, discover, and ultimately help propagate the concepts of the Singularity and Transhumanism. To create awareness, conversation, and contemplation.
I think once someone is aware of the Technological Singularity it’s easy to observe the trends behind it: as a species, we are literally trying to jump out of our bodies and exceed our limitations. If humanity were supposed to be calm, peaceful, and relaxed, then you wouldn’t see the intense fervor with which humans live their lives.
Our innate and constant dissatisfaction drives us forward. There are naturally occurring pressure differences in human society that ultimately powers the Singularity. It is pressure differences that are the ultimate cause of evolution. The only constant is change. Stagnation is Death. We must move forward always and as we do, we hoist ourselves toward that final leap out of our skin - transhumanism.
The prefix ‘trans’ is a blatant verb, meaning ‘movement’ - a basic function of space and time. As long as humanity exists within space and time, It is compelled forward. That path is heading beyond a point where ‘human’ will no longer be sufficient to describe us.
This notion is seductive. For one, it makes sense to me on an intellectual level. But there’s something else…it just ‘feels’ possible. It appeals to my sense of adventure, my nerdiness, my interest in science and science fiction. And of course, the philosopher in me.
‘The Meaning of Life?’
Nah. There simply can’t be one overarching answer or there would be no reason to live, nothing would be special, as everything would be understood. Maybe the question is the ‘prime mover’ where the Universe, of which we are all children of, is driven by.
Meaning only exists within the temporal construct of the mind that creates it. Meaning is to be found IN your life!
Let’s Google it together, shall we: “What is The Meaning of MY Life?”
